When you’ve got the flu or a winter bug, it’s important to eat the right foods and provide yourself with all the right nutrients to help you recover. Check out our list of the top 7 flu fighters that’ll have you feeling rebalanced and revitalised in no time…
Fermented foods
Fermented foods are known to be rich in probiotic bacteria which contribute to your intestinal flora, boost your gut microbiome and enhance your immune system. Why not try some Kimchi, Sauerkraut, Kefir or Kombucha? They all pack a probiotic punch!
Of course there might be some bias involved but kombucha might just be the best fermented flu fighter of them all. Why? You may ask. Well, not only does kombucha contain probiotics like all other fermented foods but it also has a high water content and everybody knows hydration is key when it comes to fighting off the flu. Equinox Kombucha also contains the finest Organic Chun-Mee Green Tea, which contains polyphenols with anti-inflammatory qualities to help you on the road to recovery.
Many of our regular drinkers claim to feel a natural lift after a bottle of booch which is just what you need when fending off the flu!
Ginger
Did you know that ginger is one of the healthiest spices out there? It contains a bioactive compound called gingerol which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, benefitting both body and brain. Who knew? The celebrity ginger shot craze isn’t just a fad (but there’s still no need to be punishing your taste buds in the name of health). Next time you’re feeling under the weather, why not try our Ginger Kombucha? It contains real ginger juice so has all the same benefits but tastes delicious!
Turmeric
Turmeric and ginger are closely related and, just like ginger, turmeric also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties. In fact, turmeric has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine for these very reasons.
At Equinox, we have worked to provide you with perfect flavour combinations and it just so happens that the earthy turmeric taste pairs perfectly with a sweet peach zing. So, give our Peach & Turmeric Kombucha a go and not only enjoy a spectacular drink, but reap the health benefits of raw turmeric and other natural additions, such as Rosehip, Ginseng and Hibiscus.
Ginseng
Ginseng has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and despite not all its claimed wonders having medical evidence to back them up, does have some proven health benefits. For example, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities make Ginseng a great natural remedy to have when you’re ill. Many also claim that it fights fatigue and promotes energy!
You can enjoy Ginseng as a warming tea or take it as a supplement but, at Equinox, we only like our Ginseng in one way and that’s in kombucha. Our Peach & Turmeric booch tastes amazing and contains organic Ginseng, for a healthy natural boost to keep you feeling refreshed.
Hibiscus
Hibiscus contains lots of antioxidants that fight off free radicals (the damaging cells that cause illness). Hibiscus can be made into tea, and there’s nothing better than a delicious, warm beverage to drink when you’ve got the flu. You can even add in a hint of ginger for double defence.
Hibiscus is a flowering plant and naturally contains high amounts of Vitamin C which may not directly rid you of the flu but will help strengthen your immune system. This immune boosting flower is one of our favourite ingredients and can be found in a number of our drinks, including: Pink Grapefruit & Guava, Raspberry & Elderflower, Wild Berry, Peach & Turmeric. So, if you’re ever in need of some Vitamin C, grab yourself some Equinox Kombucha!
Citrus fruits
Vitamin C can be found in a number of citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, grapefruit and kiwi. All of which are great for boosting your immune system and keeping you healthy. Why not try adding a slice to your kombucha? We find adding a slice of lime in a glass of Equinox Original Kombucha is particularly delicious and compliments the zingy flavour perfectly!
Oats
Oats are a hearty whole-grain that contain Vitamin E, polyphenol antioxidants and immune-strengthening beta-glucan fibre (also known as heart healthy fibre). These all strengthen the immune system and help the body fight off disease and infection. Prepare yourself a warming bowl of nutritious porridge and get creative with your toppings. Why not add in some antioxidant-loaded berries or some protein-packed almonds? The possibilities are endless and gluten free oats options are widely available!
